Toyota has been the leader in hybrid technology for over two decades since it first released the Toyota Prius in 1997. It’s Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) system combines innovation with conventional car design in order to bring you an intelligent, cost-saving and fuel efficient drive unlike any other.

In general, hybrid technology combines use of an electric battery-powered motor with a traditional internal combustion engine in order to maximize fuel efficiency. Unlike other brand’s hybrids, Toyota’s HSD technology produces a full hybrid vehicle which allows the car to run on the electric motor. When accelerating or cruising at high speeds, the gas engine turns on automatically for extra power and responsive performance when you need it. When stationary or driving in city traffic however, the vehicle can automatically switch to electric (or EV) mode using zero fuel and dramatically reducing CO2 emissions

The internal components differ for each Toyota Hybrid model, but they all include the following:

  • An electric motor;
  • Gasoline engine;
  • Power control unit;
  • Power split device;
  • Generator;
  • Battery pack; and
  • Special type of transmission for channeling the power to the wheels.

While Toyota does have plug-in models available, its Hybrid line of vehicles don’t require a hard connection into order to charge its battery. Through a process known as “regenerative breaking,” recycled energy captured through braking powers up the electric battery automatically right on the go.

Toyota offers more hybrid vehicles than any other automaker. Come find yours at Headquarter Toyota and enjoy your state-of-the-art drive home!
